This exhibition is based on three photography collections from the postwar period, preserved in the University Archives. Philipp Münch, Erika Sulzmann, and Hans Tschira captured the early years of JGU from different perspectives, each portraying the emerging campus in distinct ways. As part of a practice class in the 2026/2027 winter semester, students will work with these collections to develop an exhibition to be on display at the “Schule des Sehens” starting in summer 2027. The exhibition will focus on both the remarkable transformation of the campus and of academic life and on the historical lens through which student life and university events were staged and presented. Looking back at the early years of JGU highlights the profound changes the university in Mainz has undergone over the past 80 years.
