The ceremonial opening of the University of Mainz’s 550th anniversary celebrations will be held on November 23, 2026, at St. Martin’s Cathedral in Mainz. The date and venue of the opening ceremony are no coincidence: On November 23, 1476, the Archbishop and Elector of Mainz, Diether of Isenburg, was granted papal authorization by Pope Sixtus IV to establish a university.
The event at the cathedral marks the beginning of the anniversary year in the very heart of Mainz and reflects the close relationship between the university and the city. The opening event will be inaugurated by University President Prof. Georg Krausch and will be led jointly by the Bishop of Mainz, Prof. Peter Kohlgraf, and the President of the Protestant Church in Hesse and Nassau, Prof. Christiane Tietz. The ceremony looks back on the history of the University of Mainz while also addressing the current challenges facing the university, society, and the church. Musical contributions will be provided by Dommusik Mainz and by the choir and orchestra of the Mainz School of Music.
