On November 23, 2027, the University of Mainz will celebrate the 550th anniversary of its founding. More than half a millennium of university history is far more than a moment to pause and remember. It is a reason to celebrate, to exchange ideas, and to help shape the future of the university together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The celebrations are not limited to a single ceremony, but extend over an entire anniversary year: The program\u2019s highlights include the ceremonial opening on November 23, 2026, at Mainz Cathedral, a major campus festival on June 19, 2027, and the main anniversary ceremony on November 23, 2027, at the Mainz State Theater. We also warmly invite you to a diverse program of lecture series, exhibitions, publications, and student projects, which will be featured and showcased on this blog. A particular focus is placed on the outcomes of project-based teaching: These include, for example, a podcast series on the university\u2019s history, a city tour of sites of the Old University, and the concept for an exhibition at the Schule des Sehens<\/i> featuring photographs of the JGU campus from its early years. All of these projects bring the anniversary to life \u2013 not only on our campus, but also in the heart of Mainz. At the same time, they build a bridge between the university\u2019s past, present, and future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The blog also positions itself as a platform showcasing the full diversity of our university \u2013 from the natural sciences to medicine, the arts and music, and the humanities and social sciences. The diversity of the program and of those involved is also intended to be reflected in this blog: Here, students, faculty members, and researchers from our university are featured, as are invited guests from academia, culture, and society. We place particular importance on exchange with our municipal and regional partners, such as the Mainz Scientific City Library, the Mainz City Archives, and the Martinus Library. Together, we want to make the anniversary visible and open to a broad public audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The \u201c550 Years of the University of Mainz\u201d project is directed by Dr. Davina Beck. Academic leadership is provided by Prof. Dr. Nina Gallion from the Department of Late Medieval History and Comparative Regional History, Prof. Dr. Matthias Schnettger from the Department of Early Modern History, and Dr. Christian George, Head of the JGU Archives and Collections. The project is also supported by the Research Network University History, which provides scholarly advice on all aspects of the anniversary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the initial phase of the project, up to the kickoff on November 23, 2026, the blog will be published once a month. With the start of the anniversary year, the frequency of posts will be increased to provide closer coverage of the anniversary activities and regular insights into the celebrations as well as the accompanying academic and cultural program. As the editorial team of the University Anniversary Coordination Office, we look forward to the coming months, to engaging encounters, new ideas, and an anniversary that is shaped and supported by as many people as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
