The joint lecture series presented by Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, Philipps-Universität Marburg, the University of Tübingen, and Uppsala University explores the history of European universities from the late Middle Ages to the present day. On the occasion of the 2027 anniversary year, scholars will explore key developments and challenges in the history of universities from a comparative perspective, from university foundations and the Reformation to experiences of war and architecture, and from women’s access to higher education to the rebuilding and renewal of universities after 1945. The hybrid lecture series brings together four historic universities and offers fresh perspectives on the similarities, differences, and transformations of European universities.
